According to the survey conducted by happycurious for Sanofi, only 20% of Europeans associate counterfeiting with medicines. 77% of European consumers say they have not been adequately informed or are ignorant on the subject of fake medicines.

This lack of awareness about fake medicines exists despite the following facts:

  • 1 in 10 drugs sold worldwide are counterfeit; this figure reaches above 40% in some countries.
  • In 2013, 99 countries collaborated on Operation Pangea VI to fight against illegal online pharmacies. It resulted in the closure of 13,700 websites and the seizure of more than 10 million drugs worth a total of $36 million.
  • The profits yielded by counterfeit medicines  are greater than those derived from illicit drug trafficking.
