Nurses: A Voice to Lead
A vision for future healthcare

Each year International Nurses’ Day encourages us to reflect on the crucial role nurses play in the promotion and protection of public health. However, this year it is more important than ever to give them the support and recognition they deserve. Nurses devote all their efforts to the promotion of public health and without them, we certainly would not have come so far in the fight against COVID-19 or falsified medicines.

According to our Associate Member the International Council of Nurses (ICN), in many countries, nurses are the biggest health worker group with COVID-19 infection. For instance, in Mexico, nurses correspond to 41% of confirmed HCW infections. Furthermore, as of 31 January 2021, the cumulative number of reported COVID-19 deaths of nurses in 59 countries was 2,710. As a consequence of these shocking figures, in January 2021, the ICN drew the world’s attention to the evidence showing mental health issues and physiological impacts on nurses as a result of responding to the COVID-19 pandemic.

This 12 May, Fight the Fakes calls for increased support for nurses! Show your gratitude for their unwavering dedication, bravery and courage during these difficult times. They are key fighters who keep patients safe!

This year’s International Nurses Day theme is “Nurses: A Voice to Lead – A vision for future healthcare”. ICN has chosen this topic as they seek to show how nursing will look into the future as well as how the profession will transform the next stage of healthcare.

The Fight the Fakes Alliance is well aware of the crucial role nurses play in the fight against fake medicines and believes that a safer future is possible with their tireless efforts. Nurses are in direct daily contact with patients, as they prescribe, administer and monitor their treatment. Particularly experienced nurses with vast nursing expertise are well positioned to detect falsified medicines and their early side effects. Furthermore, nurses’ direct contact with patients allows them to educate and raise awareness on the risks of fake medicines and to detect any unusual side effects.

Don’t miss out on ICN’s webinar to learn more about this essential profession with the premiere of a short film on the matter, the presentation of the latest International Nurses Day report and the announcement of a surprise!

We encourage our members and allies to join in the ICN campaign to give nurses the recognition they deserve on this special day. They play a key role in the fight against fake medicines!
